ABOUT THE

S-70 Black Hawk

The S-70 Black Hawk is a medium transport/utility helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft. It was developed for the United States Army in the 1970s and won a competition to be designated the UH-60 Black Hawk, spawning a large family of U.S. military helicopters. The UH-60 series was designed for both commercial and military aviation corporations. In 1972, it was designed to replace the UH-1 Iroquois series of utility medium-lift helicopters. Three YUH-60A prototypes were developed, with the first flying in October 1974. Evaluation of the YUH-61A and the YUH-60A was conducted by the U.S. Army in 1979. The YUH 60A was produced and put to use as the UH- 60A Black Hawk in 1979. After it was put into service, the helicopter was modified for new missions and roles, such as mine laying and medical evacuation.

A new variant for electronic warfare and special operations support, as well as another model to support its operations, were developed. In the late 1980s, more power and lift were added to the model. An improved version was developed in the early 2000s, and its International version included GPS navigation, a glass cockpit, an integrated Flight Management System, and a more powerful powertrain and rotors to add both power and lift capability.

S-70 Firehawk

Sikorsky created the S-70, a platform for special-mission helicopters based on its S-70/UH-60 “Black Hawk” twin-engine transport aircraft. The most recent model is based on the S-70i, which is made in Poland by Sikorsky subsidiary PZL Mielec under license. Other models include the S-70A and S-70C Firehawks. The S-70i has been outfitted to cover special operations support, displaying the type’s innate adaptability, while the Firehawk is a tailored firefighting variant.

An external rescue hoist is built into the Firehawk’s firefighting design and is located off the starboard side of the fuselage. Internally, it can accommodate a full 12-person fire team in the passenger area as well as its two pilots sitting side by side up front. Additionally, the hold has enough for two medical litters and a small number of personnel for the MEDEVAC function. The Rockwell Collins-designed cockpit features an all-modern, all-glass construction, Night-Vision (NV) technology, a digital automatic flight control system, and other advanced features. The operating crew’s connection to ground forces is made possible through a tactical communications system. For operations in low light and at night, a searchlight is available. A 1,000-gallon water tank with a built-in retractable snirkel that can fill the tank in under a minute is located underneath the fuselage. The tank is a creation of the Chico, California-based Aero Union.

The Firehawk series closely resembles the Black Hawk transport series used by the American Army in terms of appearance and functionality. It had two engines mounted side by side, driving a wide-chord, four-bladed main rotor assembly over the passenger area and a four-bladed anti-torque rotor unit in the tail (facing starboard). The undercarriage has wheels, is fixed in flight, and is configured as a tail-dragger (also designed to clear the under-belly water tank). To give pilots and crew the best possible situational awareness, the aircraft has the typical window fittings. While entrance to the passenger portion is through the standard sliding doors, the pilots enter and exit through hinged car-style doors.
